George Balanchine died on April 30, 1983. He was a Russian-born choreographer and ballet dancer who is considered one of the most important figures in 20th century ballet. He founded the New York City Ballet in 1948 and served as its artistic director until his death. He created over 400 ballets, many of which are still performed today.
