George Balanchine was a Georgian-born American dancer, choreographer, and ballet director who is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of ballet. He was born in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire (now St. Petersburg, Russia), to Georgian parents. He began his dance training at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg and made his professional debut with the Mariinsky Ballet in 1921.
