Lincoln Kirstein was the main patron who catalyzed Balanchine's transition to America. He was a Harvard graduate who founded the Ballet Society, which later became the New York City Ballet. Kirstein was a great admirer of Balanchine's work, and he helped to bring him to America in 1933. Kirstein was also instrumental in establishing the School of American Ballet, which Balanchine directed.
