George Grey's father was Lieutenant-Colonel George Grey, who served as the first Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand. He was a British soldier and colonial administrator who was born in London in 1787. He served in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand in 1841 and served in this position until 1845.
