Tāwhiao was the successor of Te Wherowhero. He was the second Māori King of New Zealand, and reigned from 1858 to 1894. Tāwhiao was a strong advocate for Māori sovereignty, and he resisted the New Zealand government's attempts to take over Māori land. He also established the Māori King movement, which is still active today.
