George Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931. He was the son of a sharecropper and started singing in church at an early age. Jones moved to Beaumont, Texas, as a teenager and began his professional music career in 1950. He recorded his first hit single, "White Lightning," in 1959.
