John III Doukas Vatatzes was the emperor of Nicaea from 1222 to 1254, and the founder of the Palaiologan dynasty. He was a capable and ambitious ruler, and during his reign Nicaea reached the height of its power. In 1231, he defeated the Bulgarians at the Battle of Klokotnitsa, and in 1240 he captured Constantinople from the Latin Empire.
