George Reid's family moved to Sydney when he was 13 years old. They had previously lived in the town of Goulburn, New South Wales, but his father, a Presbyterian minister, was appointed to a church in Sydney. Reid attended Sydney Grammar School and then studied law at the University of Sydney. He was admitted to the bar in 1867 and began practicing law in Sydney.
