George Stephanopoulos left his position as White House Communications Director in December 1996, after the Republicans won control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. He had been in the position since 1993, and had been a close adviser to President Bill Clinton. He left to join ABC News, where he is now a host of the Sunday morning political talk show "This Week."
