Georges Charpak became a French citizen in 1948. Born in Poland, he fled to France during World War II and joined the French Resistance. After the war, he continued to live in France and made significant contributions to the field of particle physics. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992.
