Gardner spent much of his childhood in Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal. He was born in Brazil, but his parents moved to Madeira when he was just two years old. He lived there until he was eight years old, when his family moved back to Brazil. Gardner has said that his time in Madeira was very formative for him, and that it had a big impact on his writing.
