Barkhorn joined the Luftwaffe in 1937, at the age of 19. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a fighter pilot and eventually one of the most successful fighter aces of all time. During World War II, he flew over 1,100 combat missions and claimed 301 aerial victories, making him the third-highest scoring fighter pilot in history.
