In 17 AD, Germanicus was made proconsul of all of Gaul, Germania Inferior, and Germania Superior. He was given this position in order to deal with the rebellion of Arminius, who had led a group of Germanic tribes to defeat the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD.
