Gheorghiu-Dej first became involved in communist activities in the early 1930s. He was a member of the Romanian Communist Party and was active in organizing strikes and protests. He was also a member of the Comintern, the international communist organization. In 1933, he was arrested and imprisoned for his political activities. He was released in 1936 and continued his work with the communist party.
