Answer
Gilad Shalit was released on 18 October 2011, after being held in captivity by the Hamas in Gaza for five years. The deal that led to his release involved the release of over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, as well as the transfer of a large amount of money to the Palestinian Authority. Shalit's release was widely celebrated in Israel, and he was given a hero's welcome home.
