Gims grew up in France. He was born in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), but moved to France with his family when he was two years old. He grew up in a poor neighborhood in Paris, and he started rapping when he was a teenager. He released his first album, Subliminal, in 2011, and it was a commercial success.
