Glynis Johns was born while her parents were on tour. Her mother, the actress Mary Glynis Browne, was performing in a play in Glasgow and her father, the actor-producer Alfred Johns, was on his way to meet her after the show. He arrived at Theatre just as she was going into labour and the two were married in the hospital chapel before Glynis was born.
