Gordon Cooper retired from NASA in 1970 after a long and distinguished career in the space program. He was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, and he flew two space missions, Mercury-Atlas 9 and Gemini 5. Cooper was also the first American to spend more than a day in space, and he set a new endurance record when he spent 22 days in space on Gemini 5.
