Gordon Cooper was the youngest of the original seven astronauts in Project Mercury. He was born in 1927 and was selected as an astronaut in 1959. He was the first American to spend more than 24 hours in space, and he also made the longest single space flight in Project Mercury. He retired from NASA in 1970 and died in 2004.
