Arthur Calwell was the leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1960 to 1967. He was born in Melbourne in 1896 and joined the Labor Party in 1917. He served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I and was wounded at Gallipoli. After the war, he worked as a journalist and trade unionist.
