She was born in Darmstadt, Germany, and was the daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. She married Nicholas II in 1894 and they had five children together: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei.
