Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich was born on 18 November 1856. He was the third son of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia and Alexandra Feodorovna. Nicholas Nikolaevich served as the commander-in-chief of the Russian army during the early stages of World War I. He was removed from command in 1915 after a series of military setbacks. Nicholas Nikolaevich lived in exile after the Russian Revolution and died in 1929.
