Emperor Gratian was ruthlessly murdered by the usurper Magnus Maximus in a power struggle for the Roman throne. Maximus, a high-ranking military commander in Britain, took advantage of Gratian's absence from the region and launched an invasion of Gaul. Despite initial setbacks, Maximus's forces managed to defeat Gratian's army and capture the emperor himself near Lugdunum (Lyon) in modern-day France.
