Who succeeded Gratian as emperor of the Western Roman Empire?

  • Magnus Maximus

  • Theodosius I

  • Valentinian II

  • Valens

Answer

Magnus Maximus, a Roman general of Hispania, usurped the throne in 383 AD upon the assassination of Gratian. However, he faced challenges from both the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I and the claims of Valentinian II in the West. While he initially controlled much of the Western Empire, he was eventually defeated by Theodosius in 388 AD, who restored Valentinian II as the legitimate emperor.
