The last Pope to resign was Gregory XII, who did so in 1415 to end the Great Western Schism, a period of division within the Catholic Church where multiple popes claimed legitimacy. His resignation, along with those of his Avignon rival, Benedict XIII, and the Pisan antipope, John XXIII, paved the way for the election of Martin V and the restoration of unity within the Church.
