The Gregorian calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII, was introduced in 1582 to correct the inaccuracies of the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar, established by Julius Caesar in 46 BC, had a year that was slightly too long, causing the calendar to drift out of sync with the solar year.
