Potemkin was a Russian statesman who was a favorite of Catherine the Great. He served as the governor of Crimea from 1783 to 1791 and was responsible for developing the region into a major port. Potemkin was also given the title of Prince in the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Joseph II in 1784.
