The Tongzhi Emperor, born Zaitian, was the 9th Emperor of the Qing dynasty of China. He was the only son of the Xianfeng Emperor and the Empress Dowager Ci'an, and ruled from 1861 to 1875. During his reign, China underwent a period of reform and modernization, known as the Tongzhi Restoration.
