Poilu, meaning "hairy one" in French, was a slang term used to refer to French infantrymen during World War I. Apollinaire, a French poet and art critic, served in the French army during the war and was severely wounded in 1916. He subsequently underwent surgery and was later discharged from the military with the rank of sous-lieutenant.
