When Du Fay settled in Rome in 1429, Pope Martin V was ruling the city. He had been elected in 1417 after the Great Schism, which had split the Catholic Church into two factions, one in Rome and one in Avignon. Martin V was determined to reunite the church and restore order to the papacy.
