Günter Grass was born in Danzig on 16 October 1927. Danzig was a city in Prussia on the Baltic Sea that was annexed by Poland after World War I. Grass grew up in Danzig and was influenced by its culture and history. He later wrote about Danzig in his novels The Tin Drum and The Flounder.
