Gus Grissom died on January 27, 1967 in a fire aboard the Apollo 1 during a pre-launch test at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Grissom was the second American to fly in space, after Alan Shepard, and was scheduled to be the commander of the first manned Apollo mission.
