Virgil Ivan Grissom was born in 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana. He was a test pilot before becoming an astronaut, and he was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. He flew the first manned suborbital spaceflight in 1961, and he also flew the Apollo 1 mission, which ended in a fatal fire during a pre-launch test. Grissom died at the age of 40.
