Gustaf VI Adolf was known for his archaeological interests, which he pursued throughout his life. He was a member of the Swedish Academy of Antiquities and a patron of several archaeological institutions, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities and the National Museum of Antiquities. He also sponsored several archaeological expeditions, including one to the island of Gotland in 1938.
