Robert Catesby was a leading conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. Catesby was a member of a group of Catholic activists who were unhappy with James's rule. He and his co-conspirators planned to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605.
