Answer
Gyanendra's first reign was due to his grandfather, King Tribhuvan, taking political exile in India. This occurred in 1950 after the Rana family, who had ruled Nepal for 104 years, were overthrown in a popular uprising. King Tribhuvan returned to Nepal in 1951 and ruled until his death in 1955. Gyanendra ascended to the throne after the death of his father, King Birendra, in the 2001 Nepalese royal massacre.
