Hassanal Bolkiah's mother is Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit, the former queen of Brunei. She was born in 1936 and married Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III in 1958. They had five children together, including Hassanal Bolkiah, who became the sultan in 1967. Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit died in 2017 at the age of 81.
