The present principality of Liechtenstein was not formed by the Dietrichstein domain. The Dietrichstein family, originally from Carinthia, had held the county of Vaduz since 1613, but it was the acquisition of the county of Schellenberg in 1699 and its subsequent union with Vaduz in 1719 that resulted in the creation of the principality.
