The Luftwaffe's most successful ace, Hans-Ulrich Rudel, sank more than 50 ships during his career, including one battleship. In the early hours of 18 April 1944, he and his crew attacked the Soviet battleship Marat in the Gulf of Finland. Marat was sunk by a single bomb, which struck the aft magazines and caused a catastrophic explosion.
