Harlow Shapley was an American astronomer and astrophysicist who was the director of the Harvard College Observatory from 1921 to 1952. Shapley was born in Missouri in 1885 and studied at the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1913. He then moved to Harvard, where he worked as an assistant professor until he was appointed director of the observatory in 1921.
