Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt were the two astronauts who landed on the moon during Apollo 17. Schmitt boarded the lunar module before Cernan, as he was the geologist on the mission and needed to be the first one to step on the moon. Cernan followed Schmitt onto the moon and they spent two days exploring the surface.
