Harrison Schmitt was born on July 3, 1935 in Santa Rita, New Mexico. He was an American geologist, politician, and astronaut. He became the 13th person to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. He was also the first scientist to walk on the moon. After his time in NASA, Schmitt served as a United States Senator from New Mexico from 1977 to 1983.
