Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat, defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Bill Schmitt in the 1982 election. Bingaman was a state senator at the time and had previously run for Congress in 1978, but was defeated by Schmitt. In 1982, Bingaman won the election by a narrow margin of 2,711 votes. He would go on to serve in the U.S. Senate from 1983 to 2013.
