On May 21, 1945, at Los Alamos, New Mexico, Daghlian, Lehr, and physicist Richard Feynman were testing the implosion device. Daghlian accidentally inserted a plutonium plug too far into the hollow cavity of the implosion device, causing a premature nuclear chain reaction. The device exploded, throwing Daghlian 15 feet (4.6 m) into the air and leaving him with second-degree burns on 40 percent of his body.
