Banda was first designated Prime Minister of Nyasaland in 1963. This came after the British granted the country self-governance, but before it was granted independence in 1964. During his time as Prime Minister, Banda worked to consolidate his power and eliminate political opposition. He also worked to promote economic development and improve the lives of the people of Nyasaland.
