Hastings Banda was a Malawian physician, politician, and dictator. He was the leader of Malawi from 1966 until 1994, and the country's first president. Before his career in politics, Banda studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and worked as a doctor in the United Kingdom. He returned to Malawi in 1958 and became involved in the nationalist movement.
