Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor. She fled Austria in 1937, after the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. Lamarr was Jewish, and she feared for her safety. She moved to the United States, where she continued her acting career and also began working on inventions.
