Helle Thorning-Schmidt led her party, the Social Democrats, through three parliamentary elections. In 2005, she became the first woman to lead a major Danish political party. In the 2007 election, the Social Democrats won the most seats in parliament but fell short of a majority. In 2011, the Social Democrats won a majority of seats, and Thorning-Schmidt became Denmark's first female prime minister.
