Edwin Hubble was a contemporary of Henrietta Swan Leavitt and used her discovery to calculate the distance to other galaxies. Leavitt discovered that the period of a Cepheid variable star is related to its luminosity. Hubble used this relationship to measure the distances to other galaxies and showed that the universe is expanding.
