Capriles became the opposition candidate at the presidential elections of 2012 and 2013. In the 2012 election, he lost to incumbent president Hugo Chávez by a narrow margin of 54.4% to 45.6%. Capriles ran again in the 2013 election, but was defeated by Nicolás Maduro, Chávez's hand-picked successor, by a wider margin of 50.6% to 49.4%.
